Electricity Southland Ltd (ESL) was formed as a joint venture by The Power Company Limited and Electricity Invercargill Limited to own electricity network assets.

ESL contracts PowerNet to manage its Lakeland network assets at Frankton and Wanaka in Central Otago.

The Lakeland network assets comprise approximately 103 km of cables and 72 distribution transformers with a distribution capacity of 29.96MVA. There are just over 2000 customers connected to the network, but this number is growing all the time as ESL reticulates new subdivisions and commercial developments, including Shotover Country, Lakes Edge, Remarkables Park, Shotover Park, Bridesdale Farm, Hanley’s Farm and Northlake and Hukiwai in Wanaka.
