Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS)

RAPS is an off-the-grid electricity system that is best used for remote location. This could be because it cost too much to build power lines to serve a small amount of customers.

Electricity is typically generated by one or more of the following methods:

  • Solar panels
  • Wind turbine
  • Micro-hydro
  • Diesel or biofuel generators

These systems can be implemented together with batteries as a storage system.

Smart Energy Home

PowerNet wants to know how smart energy technologies work and how it interacts with our customers.

This is why we have equipped a standard two-bedroom in Invercargill with smart energy technologies which includes solar panels, battery storages, and energy efficient appliances such as heat pumps for space heating and hot water heating. An electric vehicle with a home-charging is also available. Partnering with families who lives in the house, we are continuing to learn everyday about these technologies and the interaction of these with the families living in the house.

Our innovative Smart Energy Home project is an important step in understanding future energy trends and usage patterns.
