Makarewa 33kV line relocation

PowerNet will be relocating a portion of the Makarewa 33kV power line, which currently runs through the Datagrid NZ building site off Flora Road East.

This work is expected to happen during September/October.

Relocating the line will enable Datagrid to complete their construction without risk to, or compromise of, the existing power line. It is not unusual for landowners to ask PowerNet to consider this if the landowner is prepared to cover the cost of any work.

This 33kV line provides a back-up supply to properties in the area and has had its power supply turned off while work begins to relocate it. It will remain in place until the relocated line is ready, meaning it can be turned back on if there are any issues with the main power supply line.

The line will be moved to follow Helena Road, cross Flora Road East, and continue along the paper road section before reconnecting with its original route. Some existing poles will be replaced with new concrete poles.

This line does not provide the ongoing power supply for the Datagrid operation, which is coming directly from Transpower.

Further work

At Transpower’s request, we will also be undergrounding the existing 11kV line along parts of Helena Road and Flora Road East to avoid any conflict with the Transpower lines coming into the Datagrid site.

What does this mean for Makarewa residents?

The 33kV line is a backup line so no power outages are planned for this work, however some customers may have a power outage while we are working on the 11kV undergrounding. You will be notified directly by your power retailer if this affects you.

You may see PowerNet crews and vehicles in the area in the next few months as we complete this work. There could be some traffic delays or lane closures to keep everyone safe while we are working.
