Power restored for most customers

Approximately 300 customers remain without power after a day of stormy weather and a Transpower fault caused thousands to be without power in the south.

We hope to get at least 150 of those customers back on tonight.

The remaining 150 customers are individual faults identified throughout Southland and Otago. These faults may affect a single property or small group of properties and can take longer to repair.

Crews will continue to work while it is safe to do so, but those without power should make preparations now in case it is not restored today.

PowerNet Operations GM Geoff Thorburn said if people are continuing to have trouble with their power supply – if it has been off and restored and is off again, or you are experiencing low voltage and things such as flickering lights, please phone us on 0800 808 587.

Orange wind warnings have been lifted for both Otago and Southland, however strong winds are still expected to continue overnight.

Strong winds, lightning strikes and a Transpower outage left approximately 25,000 customers without power around lunchtime on Sunday. The Transpower outage was restored after a couple of hours, while crews worked on weather related outages throughout the day.

Today’s outages are another good reminder that people need to be prepared for unplanned power outages, as they can happen at any time. Customers need to have an emergency kit ready and consider alternative sources of cooking and lighting. Those who are medically dependent on power should ensure they have registered this with their power retailer and have an emergency plan they can activate if required.
